Terms and Conditions for Contributors

Summary

The following summary is provided for convenience only and does not replace the full Publishing Agreement below.

  • Contributions to Ottoman Encyclopedia are submitted on a voluntary basis unless otherwise agreed in writing.

  • You confirm that your work is original, accurately researched, properly referenced where appropriate, and does not infringe the rights of others.

  • You grant Ottoman Encyclopedia the right to publish, edit, reproduce, distribute, and archive your work indefinitely.

  • You agree not to publish the same work elsewhere for one year following its publication on Ottoman Encyclopedia unless written permission is granted.

  • Ottoman Encyclopedia will credit you as the author whenever your work is published, except where substantial editorial changes make attribution impractical.

  • Editorial staff may revise submissions for style, grammar, formatting, clarity, factual consistency, or to meet publication standards.

  • Ottoman Encyclopedia may feature your work in newsletters, social media, educational resources, promotional materials, print publications, or other formats.

  • Ottoman Encyclopedia reserves the right to decline, remove, or update published material at any time.

  • Unless otherwise agreed in writing, contributors are not financially compensated for their submissions.

Publishing Agreement

By submitting any article, educational resource, image, illustration, translation, lesson plan, bibliography, or other original work ("Work") to Ottoman Encyclopedia ("OE"), you agree to the following terms.

1. Grant of License

You grant Ottoman Encyclopedia a worldwide, exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable licence to publish, reproduce, distribute, display, archive, translate, adapt, edit, and otherwise use your Work in any medium, including digital, print, audio, video, educational resources, and future technologies.

This licence includes the right for Ottoman Encyclopedia to:

  • publish your Work on its website;

  • include your Work in educational courses and teaching resources;

  • feature your Work in newsletters, podcasts, exhibitions, social media, promotional campaigns, and printed publications;

  • translate your Work into other languages;

  • create derivative works for educational or editorial purposes;

  • archive your Work permanently; and

  • licence or sublicense your Work to third parties where appropriate.

For one (1) year following publication, Ottoman Encyclopedia shall retain exclusive publication rights to the Work. After this period, you may republish the Work elsewhere provided that Ottoman Encyclopedia is clearly acknowledged as the original publisher with an appropriate citation and link where possible.

Ottoman Encyclopedia reserves the right to remove or revise published material at any time without affecting the licence granted under this Agreement.

2. Attribution

Where your Work is published, Ottoman Encyclopedia will make reasonable efforts to identify you as the author.

Editorial revisions, formatting changes, title changes, or minor factual corrections shall not affect authorship.

If your contribution becomes part of a substantially revised collaborative work or reference article, Ottoman Encyclopedia reserves the right to determine the appropriate form of attribution.

3. Compensation

Unless agreed otherwise in writing before submission, contributions are made voluntarily and without financial compensation.

Publication of a submission does not create an employment relationship between the contributor and Ottoman Encyclopedia.

Should Ottoman Encyclopedia commercially license or publish your Work in a manner generating direct revenue specifically attributable to your contribution, any compensation shall be determined solely at the discretion of Ottoman Encyclopedia or under a separate written agreement.

4. Contributor Warranties

By submitting your Work, you represent and warrant that:

  • You are the creator or lawful owner of the Work and possess all rights necessary to grant this licence.

  • The Work is original.

  • The Work is not plagiarised.

  • The Work does not infringe copyright, trademark, privacy, or any other legal rights.

  • The Work is not simultaneously under consideration by another publisher unless disclosed in writing.

  • All quotations, translations, images, and other third-party materials have been properly credited and used with the necessary permissions.

  • Sources have been cited according to accepted academic standards where appropriate.

  • The factual statements contained within the Work are, to the best of your knowledge, accurate.

  • The Work contains no unlawful, defamatory, fraudulent, or misleading material.

5. Editorial Policy

Ottoman Encyclopedia maintains editorial independence.

Submission does not guarantee publication.

Editors may:

  • request revisions;

  • make stylistic and grammatical edits;

  • verify factual claims;

  • request additional references;

  • shorten or expand material;

  • reject submissions; or

  • remove previously published content where necessary.

Editorial decisions are final.

6. Copyright

Copyright in the original Work remains with the contributor unless otherwise agreed in writing.

By accepting this Agreement, you grant Ottoman Encyclopedia the licence described above to publish and use the Work indefinitely.

7. Withdrawal of Submissions

Unpublished submissions may be withdrawn by notifying the editorial team before publication.

Once published, Ottoman Encyclopedia is under no obligation to remove the Work, although removal requests may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

8. Changes to These Terms

Ottoman Encyclopedia may update these Terms and Conditions from time to time.

The version in effect at the time of submission shall govern that particular contribution.

9. Acceptance

By submitting any material to Ottoman Encyclopedia, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to these Terms and Conditions for Contributors.
